Viking Swords

During the Viking Age, it was more often that the people who held very high status were buried with swords.

Swords were prized possessions during the Viking Age, and not everyone was able to afford them.

Swords could be passed down from generation to generation, and they were commonly gifts to those with high status to help stay on good terms with them.

Many findings of Viking age swords have been recovered in lakes, as they were often used as sacrifices during that time period.

The hilts of these beautiful swords could be made into many shapes and were typically made with antler, bone, or metals such as silver and gold. 

The Viking swords were about 35 inches long and were very often double-sided. 

We have had the exciting pleasure of viewing museums in our homeland of Norway, where they have on display historically accurate copies of these weapons. It is not difficult to see how much time they spent on making these weapons not only deadly but beautifully designed. It must have been an exhilarating feeling to be a Viking warrior on the front lines with a sword that was passed down from a king.
